Salina snow forecast, closures as winter storm hits Kansas Thursday

As snow covers the roads of Salina, schools, libraries and churches close their doors.

The Wichita National Weather Service expects snow to continue until 10 a.m. Thursday in Salina. The roads will continue to become snowy and slippery.

Two rounds of snow are expected to fall in Kansas, Thursday through Friday. The first flurry of snow, the NWS reports, will occur in central Kansas until noon. The second flurry of snow will occur in southern Kansas Thursday night through noon Friday.

How much snow will Salina get?

The NWS expects 3 to 4 inches of snow to fall in Salina by noon Thursday. Some areas north of the Interstate-70 corridor are expected to get 6 to 8 inch service projects. Below normal temperatures will accompany the snow, with sub-zero wind chills sweeping across central Kansas on Friday morning.

Snow closures in Salina

Schools in Ell-Saline, Salina and Southeast Salina closed Thursday, and Southeast Saline also closed Friday. Solomon Schools also closes on both days.

Salina Area Technical College and Kansas State University closed Thursday. Salina KANSASWORKS Workforce Center will delay opening until 10 a.m.

Emergency accident report

The City of Salina’s emergency accident reporting plan is currently in place due to extreme weather and/or dangerous driving conditions as the number of motor vehicle accidents exceeds the department’s ability to respond in right time.

Eligible Accidents: Any motor vehicle accident without hit-and-run, bodily injury, that does not require towing and does not involve alcohol or drugs. Driver Requirements: Exchange personal information with other drivers involved or the owner.

Complete an Emergency Accident Reporting Plan accident report form as completely as possible and mail or deliver the completed report to the Salina Police Department within 48 hours. Emergency Accident Report Plan forms are available from the Salina Police Department or at www.salina-ks.gov/reportsandnotifications.
